The main thing that comes to mind about me is that I'm a Canadian bassist and drummer. I also picked up guitar recently, but I'm not really any good yet. Probably because I prefer to noodle rather than practice. To be fair, I learned to play bass pretty much just by noodling and occasionally learning songs for a cover band I managed to get into.
on my interests,, i am quite into what is most easily described as indie rock, but that means almost nothing at this point so i'll talk about the bands i like. my two favourite bands are sloan and king gizzard and the lizard wizard. those albums i've linked there are the best introductions to both bands in my opinion, but both bands have been quite varied. sloan is usually described as a power pop band, which i've had some difficulty understanding as a genre. the way i think of it is songs by rock bands that aren't really 'rockers', but that aren't ballads or anything like that either. people like to make comparisons to the beatles, and like sure, i guess i hear it, but the beatles didn't invent everything. navy blues is my favourite sloan album, but lots of people say twice removed or one chord to another is better. they're alright, but my actual runner-up for favourite album is between the bridges. one chord to another is good too
king gizzard has been all over the place. i love them for their rock albums, like i'm in your mind fuzz, murder of the universe, and of course, nonagon infinity, but the thing that actual makes them so great is how far they've gone from that sound. take paper mache dream balloon, a psych-pop folk-rock album, float along fill your lungs, a downtempo* psych-rock album, or even infest the rat's nest, a full on thrash metal album.
I've also gone through phases of liking a lot of different things, but I rarely seem to actually hold onto them. Not to say they're not great, but I don't know,, the interest just kinda faded. There was a time when I decided to listen to most of king crimson's discography, despite not really caring for anything after In the Court of the Crimson King, there was a time when I loved all of the original half life games (despite ruining it for myself with overzealous saving), I used to love Tally Hall, (it's not the band i hate, it's the fans) and many of their songs still hold up. I had a huge ultrakill phase, like i genuinely loved that game so much. possibly the most change to my life a game has made, even if not much? It's also my most played game on steam, probably only beaten by minecraft, roblox, and terraria if you include when i used to play it on my ipad. let it be known i got into king gizzard all of a month before they were added to the game. i was also quite into stick war saga, which is basically stick war with online multiplayer, this year, ending about as soon as my exams were done. it's just that kinda game that you only really play because it's on your phone and you're bored at school. also they ruined the entire visual aesthetic in the last update.
i have historically struggled with answering the question of what bands i like, because i like a lot of single albums from bands with many, or even a few albums, but don't actually know anything about the band. I've been told by a friend that i can still consider those to be bands i like, SO: i like LCD soundsystem's first three albums. haven't listened to the fourth, but i think it's fun how they progressed from minor key one-chord beats to major key synth-pop type stuff. this is a generalization and synth-pop may be the wrong label. I like the beatles, despite the fact i often call them mid. They have lots of great songs but they tend to be weighed down by being surrounded by random stuff on their albums, which hurts things for me. but it's also unfair because a good song on a bad album still deserves to be appreciated. and abbey road rocks. especially the medley. radiohead can be good at times too. i kind of prefer their earlier stuff to the electronic stuff, much to the chagrin of radiohead fans everywhere. the bends, ok computer, and in rainbows are all great albums. i think geese might be good, particularly 3D country. projector also may be good, but i'm not crazy about getting killed. sorry!
another album that is especially important to me is take care of yourself, by december 7th sound team, which is almost certainly one guy. it's the soundtrack for a slightly obtuse rpg maker game with some really great emotional moments, but like half of the songs on it don't even play in the game. you should still try to play the game first if you can, but it's not really needed to appreciate the album. it mixes proper vocal indie-folk pop tunes (don't kill me if that's an inaccurate label!) with soundtrack tunes for the game, as well as interludes of audio of the game being played and what i presume are recordings from the creator's childhood? i could easily be wrong. every song on this album is amazing. i'm not typically one to listen for lyrics, but like, god damn,, emotions have been felt. since listening to this album for the first time, it's kind of infected my mind. i haven't heard anything quite like it, which isn't to say there isn't anything similar, but that i haven't found it yet. this album has genuinely affected my musical vocabulary. it gave me way more of an appreciation for melody rather than just riffs. it made me love major keys, which is about as dumb as it sounds, but for a time i was absolutely biased against them. it turns out that everything about major keys i viewed as cliche can actually be really beautiful when used right.
the december 7th sound team used to have another album on their bandcamp page, it was a fanmade soundtrack for some other rpg maker game called pen palz. it has since disappeared, and i highly doubt i'll ever get to listen to it. for a time after the release of take care of yourself, the people/person of december 7th creative business corporation were working on another game, but apparently it's been cancelled.
